Turkey Canyon is often home to a group of Rio Grande turkey who roost in a large mott of live oak (Quercus virginiana) located in the center of the watershed. The cluster of oaks provides the perching space and off-the-ground protection that the turkeys need while sleeping.
In the 1870s, this area was settled by a family that constructed a homestead out of field-gathered stone. Today, their rocks walls are still erect, and traces of the home site can be seen. They selected an ideal location uphill from a 12-acre field that abuts the perennially flowing Honeycut Hollow Spring.
