In Walnut Canyon grows a large population of Texas walnut (Juglans microcarpa) trees that line the creek bank. Near the center of this drainage basin stands an operational windmill that fills a cistern and water trough, providing a reliable water source for wildlife throughout the year.

This watershed contains substantial plant and animal diversity, likely due to the equal proportion of bottomland, forested slopes, and savannah uplands. This area often yields new and rare species on our annual bird counts. Walnut Canyon has more acreage classified as north-facing slope than any of the other ranch watersheds, which provides the needed conditions for the growth of several rare plant species.
